Utah Golf Courses: The Unexpected Eco-Friendly Heroes of the State

New educational video shows how Utah golf courses are helping the environment and communities thrive with 17,000 acres of green infrastructure and $805 million in total economic impact

OGDEN, UT (May 8, 2023) - The Utah Golf Course Superintendents Association (UGCSA) and sustainability consulting firm Radius Sports Group have released a new educational video showing the environmental and economic benefits of golf courses in the state. The video “This Place” highlights conservation practices and positive impacts from 17,000 acres of green infrastructure for vital ecosystem services, such as wildlife habitat, urban cooling, and water filtration.

The video, launched during the week of National Golf Day, May 10, supports community engagement and education efforts around universal benefits of golf for all Utahns, not just golfers. Utah golf courses generate $805 million in total economic impact and support 9,600 jobs. Additionally, golf courses in Utah have donated more than $11 million to local charities. The 3-minute video also highlights water conservation best management practices (BMPs), such as using drought-tolerant turfgrass species, recycled water for irrigation, and reducing irrigated acreage at 44 percent of Utah golf courses over the last six years.

"We are thrilled to share education about our eco-friendly golf courses in Utah," said UGCSA President and Superintendent at Lakeside Golf Course, Josh Virostko. "We have more than 100 golf course superintendents who serve as stewards of the land and play a vital role in supporting the environment and our local communities…we are proud to share our story."

Utah golf courses use science based BMPs to manage resources sustainably, including water conservation, wildlife habitat preservation, pollinator protection, and energy conservation. They use secondary, non-potable water for irrigation at nearly 60 percent of facilities and reclaimed water at 11 percent statewide. The UGCSA developed a BMP guide in 2020 to provide a reference and tool for sustainable resource management at Utah’s 120 golf courses.

"Golf courses are often overlooked when it comes to their environmental contributions, but the reality is that they provide crucial ecosystem services," said Radius Sports Group President, Gina Rizzi. "From cooling cities to cleaning stormwater runoff to providing habitat for millions of migratory birds and Utah wildlife. We're proud to have collaborated with the UGCSA to help educate on the positive impacts."

The video and educational content were developed with the support of the Utah Golf Alliance, Utah Golf Association, Professional Golfers' Association Utah Section, and a grant from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA).

Radius Sports Group Partners with the Lone Star Golf Course Superintendents Association to Launch New Video Showing Mission of Superintendents and Community Benefits of Texas Golf Courses

Texas Golf Drives Positive Environmental & Economic Impacts for the Lone Star State

New video shows ecosystem benefits gained from 85,000 acres of golf course green infrastructure and $7.4B in economic impact

HOUSTON, TX (December 12, 2022) The Lone Star Golf Course Superintendents Association (LSGCSA) has released a new video in collaboration with Radius Sports Group showing the mission of Texas golf course superintendents to provide valuable ecosystem services, quality playing conditions, jobs, and economic impact for the state. The video highlights the benefits of approximately 85,000 acres of greenspace, $7.4 billion of total economic impact, and 100,000 jobs driven by the Texas golf industry.

Texas golf’s green infrastructure includes 57,000 acres of rough, wetlands, and native terrain which supports wildlife and pollinator habitats, cools urban heat islands, mitigates flooding, and filters stormwater runoff. The 3-minute video features water conservation best management practices (BMPs) including use of drought tolerant turfgrass species and recycled water for irrigation at 40 percent of Texas golf courses.

“It is crucial to protect the open space within our great state,” said General Manager Squaw Valley Golf Course and LSGCSA President Jeff Hansen. “This video shares how sustaining the health of our golf courses contributes to ecosystem benefits from 85,000 acres of green infrastructure – from cooling our cities to providing wildlife habitat, and so much more.”

Texas Golf BMPs drive sustainable resource management through thirteen key areas including water conservation and management, pollinator and wildlife protection, and energy conservation. A formal Texas Golf Industry BMP Guide was developed in collaboration with Reno-based sustainability consulting firm, Radius Sports Group, in 2020.

“We're proud that Texas golf facilities are leaders in environmental stewardship,” said General Manager High Meadow Ranch Golf Club and LSGCSA BMP Committee Chair Cody Spivey. “Texas golf course superintendents strive to leave the land better than they found it. Science-based BMPs ensure our golf courses are as healthy as possible now and for generations to come.”

The video and educational content was developed with the support of the Texas Golf Association, Professional Golfers’ Association North Texas and South Texas Sections, Texas Lone Star Chapter of the Club Management Association, Texas Alliance of Recreational Organizations, and supported in part by a grant from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). The Texas Golf BMP Guide contributed to successful attainment of the GCSAA’s nationwide goal of 50 states establishing state specific BMPs by 2020. The initiative is a significant sports industry “first” showing the golf industry’s desire to lead environmental efforts through proactive measures.

New Hawaii Golf Course Maintenance BMP Handbook Promotes Performance and Sustainability

Radius Sports Group, a subsidiary of ARCUS Marketing Group, LLC., partnered with the Hawaii Golf Course Superintendents Association (HGCSA) to publish the first state best management practices guide aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Hawai’i Golf Course Superintendents Association Releases

Handbook of Hawai’i Golf Maintenance Best Management Practices

Handbook promotes healthy green spaces for optimal performance and

environmental sustainability within the Hawai’i golf industry

WAILUKU, HI (October 1, 2019) The Hawai’i Golf Course Superintendents Association (HGCSA) today released a handbook of Hawai’i Golf Maintenance Best Management Practices (BMPs). The handbook promotes environmental stewardship, golf course playability, and overall health of the Hawai’i golf and tourism industries. The BMPs provide guidance for Hawai’i golf course maintenance professionals covering twelve key areas including archaeological awareness, wildlife protection, surface water management and water quality, nutrient use, integrated pest management, energy, and others.

“We’re proud to release the handbook, the HGCSA encourages its 125 members to perform at the highest standards with ongoing care and respect for the environment,” said Nanea Golf Club superintendent, HGCSA president, and BMP steering committee co-chair Scott Main. “It’s important for collaboration within our communities.”

The HGCSA is the first state chapter to integrate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) throughout its handbook. The SDGs, or Global Goals, are a universal call-to-action to end poverty, protect the planet, and promote peace and prosperity.

“Our goal is to provide healthy green spaces, honoring the land, tradition, and people of Hawai’i,” said sustainability consulting firm Radius Sports Group President and HGCSA steering committee co-chair Gina Rizzi. “Integrating the Sustainable Hawai’i Initiative and SDGs demonstrates how Hawai’i’s golf maintenance practices align to local and global goals.”

The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), supported by the United States Golf Association (USGA) and PGA TOUR, provided state chapters with a national BMP template and grant through the Environmental Institute for Golf (EIFG) to help develop guidelines specific to each state by 2020. The HGCSA BMP steering committee, comprised of superintendents, experts from the University of Hawai’i, and sustainability field, authored the book. Radius helped develop the guide and conduct a stakeholder review with industry leaders and officials from the Hawai’i Departments of Health and Agriculture.

“Golf maintenance is a critical function,” said Main. “Our efforts can help conserve resources and enhance community relations, plus support jobs, golf rounds, and occupancy levels to drive local economic impact. We appreciate GCSAA, USGA, and the PGA Tour, in addition to our local and national affiliate partners who have supported the handbook.”

The handbook is now available online at www.hawaiigolfbmp.org or www.hawaiigolfbmp.org/bmphome/hawaiibmp-handbook.
